OUR STORY

Roy Bunch founded Bunch Marine back in 1962. In the early days, Bunch Marine kept a few fishing boats in stock, but the focus was on boat and motor servicing. A passion for the marine industry spread through the Bunch family tree, starting with Roy’s grandson Curtis. From the age of 12, Curtis worked alongside side his grandfather—gaining industry knowledge and developing business and customer service skills.

Fast forward to the late 70s–after years of hard work, it was time for Curtis to take the captain’s seat. Despite a recession and a struggling marine industry, Curtis was able to secure a loan and take ownership of his Papaw’s business. As the economy bounced back, Bunch Marine grew significantly.

They hired more employees, began carrying family and recreational boats in addition to fishing boats, expanded the service department, and added a 14,000 square foot workshop.

Shelia, Curtis’ wife, has played an important role in the success of the company. She provides constant support, weighs in on every important decision, and keeps the business running smoothly. She began her own successful business venture 14 years ago when she became the owner and promoter of the East TN Fishing Show, the biggest fishing event in the South. It doesn’t stop there, Shelia started a second fishing show, The Alabama Fishing Show & Expo, and The Outdoor Showcase, a TV show that promotes outdoor-related businesses.

Shelia and Curtis’ sons, Daniel and Michael, learned about the business in the same way their father did, by helping and soaking up knowledge from Curtis on weekends and after school. Their daughter, Riley, was essentially born into the business in 1997. Daniel passed away in 2004, but Michael and Riley have continued within the family business, passionately working to carry on the legacy and passions of their brother and family.

Throughout the years Bunch Marine has encountered a lot of obstacles—two recessions, the pandemic, rising inflation and interest rates, and an injury to Curtis’ spinal cord. Bunch Marine has managed to navigate rough waters and continue to grow despite these challenges. Curtis believes that the secret to their success is simple, “just be good people”. Curtis has taught his children what these words mean in the business world—say what you mean and mean what you say, follow through with your commitments, and treat people with respect. Conducting business in this way has led to repeat customers, word-of-mouth recommendations, a positive reputation, and Bunch Marine’s growth from a small business to one of the largest boat dealers in East TN.
